Two HVRC racers competed in the the PA Cup 1 & 2 Slalom Races at 7 Springs on Saturday/Sunday, January 11-12. After a tough rainy morning on Saturday, N. Blasey (U18) threw down the 8th fastest time out of about (70) racers in the 2nd run. Sunday was a better day as Nick finished 20th overall with another great 2nd run. J. Jupena (U21) had one of his finest days finishing 27th overall. John is longtime HVRC member with a reputation for finishing races even when the track is worn. On this day, he finished about 30 places ahead of his start position, which is difficult to do! Finally, our best wishes and thanks to Ali Zeliff (Coach) for her coaching support over the past month. Ali has returned to Purdue to continue her schooling, but we hope to see her again soon!
The Critchfield Cup will be held January 26th and is open to the public as are all Open Cup Races. Club members should be aware that the Critchfield Cup is not included in club membership. The entry fee is $20 per racer for that race. Each racer gets two runs and awards are based on the best of the two runs. Age Groups run from U8 – U21 in two year increments, 21-35, 36-50, and over 50; your age is the age you are as of 31 December 2013. We will take registrations for the Critchfield Cup beginning 4 January. There will be t-shirts for all racers entered in the event by 19 January. Please register for this event if you have not already done so. We can take registrations at or immediately after practice in Glaciers.
We are practicing this Saturday and Sunday. Saturday will be a GS based practice with no gates. Emphasis will be on pole planting skills. Alec, Libby, and Eric will meet racers at 9:15 AM. Sunday practice will be on Imperial with gates; GS course up top and Bamboo Forest down the lower headwall. Those helping with set up should meet Ralph at 8:30. This is a holiday weekend so we will remove the course early if crowds dictate. Racers should meet coaches at 9 AM.
Our annual Race Clinic is scheduled for Saturday/Sunday February 15/16. The race clinic is for both HVRC and non-members, and it runs from 10 AM – 3 PM both days. The clinic is typically held on Comet on Saturday and Imperial and/or Cobra on Sunday. This is our best opportunity to interest younger skiers in racing. The clinic is included in HVRC membership. For those that are interested in trying out a bit of race training, this is a great opportunity to get some race training and learn a bit about HVRC! Non-members pay $140 for both days, which includes an Open Cup Race. Racers are responsible for ensuring they have a lift ticket or season pass. We can begin accepting entries during Open Cup registration. All club parents are asked to help out with the race clinic. We will need set up and teardown help along with registration both days. Sandy Blasey will be coordinating lunch for both days. We probably talking food for about 60 racers and another 30 for support staff. You may begin signing up with Sandy by email (cc’d) or at Open Cup awards on the 26th.
Special Olympics is scheduled for Monday/Tuesday, February 10-11. This is one of our opportunities to help Hidden Valley with a longtime annual event. HVRC handles all of the course set up and teardown for both days. We start at 6 AM and usually finish by 4 PM. Parents and racers are encouraged to help us. We will need a couple of drivers between 6 AM and 9 AM to shuttle set up folks up the hill so fill up that coffee cup! Please advise Steve Jupena or Ralph Manson as soon as possible if you are able to help one or both days.
