A number of HVRC racers competed in the Phillip Dupres Slalom at 7 Springs on Saturday, January 25th.  A. Kreps (U10) and N. Blasey  (U18) both bring home a 3rd place trophy.  B. Baughman (U12) also continues his good season with a 3rd place trophy.  Brother Cole (U14) missed the podium, but put down two 4th place runs, which should help him in his Derby quest.  There are two remaining regional qualifiers for PA Derbies; both occurring the weekend of 8-9 February.  Your racer needs finishes in one less than half of the available runs.  For U16, the number of finished runs is 6, For U14 and U12, the number is 4.  Obviously, more finishes will help your racer’s chances of making Derby.

Sunday will be our 4th Open Cup Race.  Set up will begin at 11 AM.  If you are available, please join us.  We are also helping out with Special Olympics training so there will be plenty to do.  The SO athletes will be using the Open Cup course and a short course on Upper Continental.

We are practicing this Friday and Saturday.  Friday is a slalom practice is from 7:30-9PM on lower Imperial.  Saturday will be a GS based practice from 9AM – Noon on Imperial with a full gate course.  Emphasis will be on turn shapes and rise lines.  Kelli, Libby, Eric M., and Eric H. will meet racers at 9:00 AM.

Our annual Race Clinic is scheduled for Saturday/Sunday February 15/16.  The race clinic is for both HVRC and non-members, and it runs from 10 AM – 3 PM both days.  The clinic is typically held on Comet on Saturday and Imperial and/or Cobra on Sunday.  This is our best opportunity to interest younger skiers in racing.  The clinic is included in HVRC membership.  For those that are interested in trying out a bit of race training, this is a great opportunity to get some race training and learn a bit about HVRC!  Non-members pay $140 for both days, which includes an Open Cup Race.  Racers are responsible for ensuring they have a lift ticket or season pass.  We are accepting entries during Open Cup registration or you may register at Customer Service or Ski School.  All club parents are asked to help out with the race clinic.  We will need set up and teardown help along with registration both days.  Sandy Blasey will be coordinating lunch for both days.  We are probably talking food for about 60 racers and another 30 for support staff.  If you have not already done so, please sign up with Sandy by email or at Open Cup awards on the 2nd.

Special Olympics is scheduled for Monday/Tuesday, February 10-11.  This is one of our opportunities to help Hidden Valley with a longtime annual event.  HVRC handles all of the course set up and teardown for both days.  We start at 6 AM and usually finish by 4 PM.  Parents and racers are encouraged to help us.  We will need a couple of drivers between 6 AM and 9 AM to shuttle set up folks up the hill so fill up that coffee cup!  Please advise Steve Jupena or Ralph Manson as soon as possible if you are able to help one or both days.

The PA Cup 3, 4, and 5 GS Races are scheduled to be held at Blue Friday/Saturday/Sunday, 31 January – 2 February.  There are three races; both are open to U18, and U21 only.  If your racer is planning to compete, registration should be completed by now.

The Critchfield GS Race is scheduled to be held at 7 Springs on Saturday, 8 February.  This is a derby qualifier for U12, U14, and U16.  U10, U18 and U21 entries are also welcome.  On-line registration is available now via alpinereg.com link to the right on this page .  If your racer is planning to compete, registration should be completed by February 1st .  The race entry fee should be around  $35.  U10 entry spots may be limited for this race.  U18 and U21 will not be scored for this event.  If your racer is contemplating trying a USSA race, this is a good one to consider.  Please advise the coaches if your racer is planning to compete.

HVRC sends its condolences and sympathies to the Critchfield family on their loss.  Nancy’s (Ski Patrol & HVRC Mom) father passed away this week.  Her son, Albie (HVRC member),  daughter Mary Beth (Ski School), and husband, Rich (Coach & HVRC Dad; founding member) have been involved with Hidden Valley for many years as was Nancy’s father.

The Wisp Classic Slalom Race is scheduled to be held at Wisp on Sunday, 9 February.  This is a derby qualifier for U12, U14, and U16.  U10, U18 and U21 entries are also welcome.  U18 and U21 will not be scored.  On-line registration is available now via the alpinereg.com link on the right side of this page .  If your racer is planning to compete, registration should be completed by 3 February.  The race entry fee should be around  $35.  U10 entry spots may be limited for this race.  This is the final race that counts for derby points.  Please advise the coaches if your racer is planning to compete.
